U.S. Naval Update Map: July 1, 2009



Carrier Strike Groups

* The USS John C. Stennis CSG departed from Everett, Wash., on June 30 and is currently en route to San Diego, Calif., on a Tiger Cruise with crew members’ friends and families.
* The USS Harry S. Truman CSG is conducting routine operations in the western Atlantic.
* The USS Ronald Reagan CSG is under way in the Indian Ocean after concluding a three-day scheduled port visit to Singapore on June 28.
* The USS George Washington CSG is currently under way in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations as part of the ship’s regular summer deployment.
* The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CSG is under way in the North Arabian Sea conducting maritime security operations in the 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR).
* The USS Carl Vinson is currently conducting sea trials in the western Atlantic.

Amphibious Ready Groups/Marine Expeditionary Units

* The USS Boxer ARG along with the 13th MEU anchored in Phuket, Thailand, on June 25 for several days of rest and relaxation on the return home from a regularly scheduled deployment to the U.S. Pacific and Central Commands in support of global maritime security.
* The USS Bataan ARG is conducting Marine Security Operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations along with embarked Marines from the 22nd MEU.
* The USS Bonhomme Richard ARG is conducting its initial integration exercise with the 11th MEU off the U.S. Pacific coast.

* The USS Harry S. Truman is currently under way in the western Atlantic Ocean, where it had been conducting Composite Unit Training Exercises that concluded June 23.
* The USS Ronald Reagan CSG arrived in Singapore on June 24 for a scheduled port visit, the first port visit of the ship’s 2009 Western Pacific deployment.
* The USS George Washington CSG is currently under way in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations as part of the ship’s regular summer deployment.

*The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CSG is under way in the North Arabian Sea conducting maritime security operations in the 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR).

* The USS Essex ARG is currently under way in the Pacific Ocean serving as the flagship for CTF 76, the Navy’s only forward-deployed amphibious force commander. The USS Essex ARG is made up of three warships as well as the 31st MEU.
* The USS Bataan entered the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations after transiting the Suez Canal and relieving the USS Boxer on June 20. The USS Bataan will be conducting Marine Security Operations while deployed to the region along with embarked Marines from the 22nd MEU.
* The USS Nassau is currently under way in the Atlantic Ocean.
* The USS Iwo Jima is currently under way in the Atlantic Ocean following its return to Norfolk, Va., last week.

Elements of the Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group will begin to arrive April 17 and the USS Theodore Roosevelt and the remaining vessels will arrive April 18.
* The USS John C. Stennis CSG arrived in Laem Chabang, Thailand for scheduled port call from April 5-8 and is currently underway in the South China Sea conducting scheduled operations.
* The USS Abraham Lincoln is located in Bremerton, Washington after unloading its payload for a scheduled Planned Incremental Availability.
* The USS George H.W. Bush conducted additional acceptance trials off the coast of Virginia April 7-9 before returning to its home port of Naval Station Norfolk at Norfolk, Va. April 9.

Expeditionary Strike Groups

* The USS Boxer ESG is currently underway in the Gulf of Aden conducting maritime security operations in the 5th Fleet AOR after assisting in the rescue of MV Maersk Alabama Captain Richard Phillips April 12.
* The USS Essex is located in the Bicol region of the Republic of the Philippines for scheduled participation in the joint US-RP bilateral military humanitarian assistance and training exercise Balikatan 2009 April 16-30. The USS Denver (LPD 9), the USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49), the USS Tortuga (LSD 46) and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit will join the USS Essex as part of PHIBRON-11, the Navy’s only forward deployed amphibious squadron, in these exercises as well.
* The USS Wasp is underway in the Eastern Atlantic ocean after deploying April 9 to the 6th Fleet assisting the redeployment of Marine assets in the 6th Fleet AOR.

* The USS Iwo Jima returned to its home port of Naval Station Norfolk on March 27 after completing a scheduled seven-month deployment to the 5th Fleet and 6th Fleet AORs.
* The USS Boxer is currently under way in the Gulf of Aden conducting maritime security operations in the 5th Fleet AOR. The USS Boxer is also the flagship of Combined Task Force 151, a counterpiracy operation to detect and deter piracy in the 5th Fleet AOR.

* The USS John C. Stennis is currently under way in the western Pacific Ocean after departing from Hong Kong on Feb. 21.
* The USS Ronald Reagan is located in the Southern California Operating Area following the conclusion of Fleet Replacement Squadron Carrier Qualifications on Feb. 24.
* The USS Nimitz is located in the Southern California Operating Area following the conclusion of Tailored Ship’s Training Availability (TSTA) on Feb. 24.
* The USS Harry S. Truman is currently under way in the western Atlantic Ocean following the conclusion of Carrier Qualifications on Feb. 24. The USS Truman will undergo various scheduled sea trials in the coming weeks.

* The USS Iwo Jima ESG is conducting maritime security operations in the 5th Fleet AOR as of Feb. 14.
* USS Boxer ESG departed Maldives on Feb. 24 following the conclusion of Exercise Coconut Grove 2009, a bilateral, military-to-military and humanitarian civic assistance engagement with the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) designed to strengthen bilateral ties and interoperability between the services.
* The USS Essex is currently under way in the Gulf of Thailand after completing the joint multinational force Cobra Gold 2009 exercises Feb. 17.
* The USS Bataan is conducting routine training operations off the coast of the southeastern United States as part of a scheduled workup for a deployment later this year.

* The USS George H. W. Bush’s sea trials have been delayed one month until the end of February due to discrepancies revealed in operational testing before the carrier was to begin the trials.

U.S. Naval Update Map: Jan. 28, 2009

The Naval Update Map shows an approximation of the current locations of U.S. Carrier Strike Groups (CSGs) and Expeditionary Strike Groups (ESGs), the keys to U.S. dominance of the world’s oceans. A CSG is centered on an aircraft carrier, which projects U.S. naval and air power and supports a carrier air wing. An ESG is centered on a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), a heavily reinforced and mobile battalion of Marines. Each is equipped with a significant offensive strike capability.



Carrier Strike Groups

  • The USS Theodore Roosevelt CSG is currently located in the northern Arabian Sea conducting maritime security operations for the 5th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR), which includes Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower is currently located off the U.S. eastern seaboard in the west Atlantic conducting composite unit training exercises (COMPUTEX) with CSG 8.
  • The USS John C. Stennis CSG is currently under way in the 7th Fleet AOR in the western Pacific with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9 and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 21 conducting routine operations.
  • The USS Abraham Lincoln is conducting training exercises in the Southern California Operating Area as part of a scheduled workup.
  • The USS Kitty Hawk will be decommissioned Jan. 31 in a ceremony at Naval Base Kitsap’s Pier D honoring its 47 years of service. The Kitty Hawk served as the only forward-deployed U.S. carrier, stationed at Yokosuka, Japan from 1998 to 2008. It was replaced by the USS George Washington in August 2008.
  • The USS George H. W. Bush was commissioned on Jan. 10 at Naval Station Norfolk as the last of the Nimitz class aircraft carriers to be built. The USS Bush is scheduled to begin conducting sea trials later this quarter.

The annual five-day bilateral exercise is designed to enhance joint combat readiness between the U.S. and South Korean militaries through intensive amphibious training.
  • The USS Boxer is conducting a Composite Training Unit Exercise in the Pacific Ocean as part of the preparation for its regularly scheduled deployment in early 2009.
  • The USS Bataan returned to sea Nov. 12 to conduct predeployment training operations. The ship departed from New York City, where it participated in a week-long port visit and community-relations project.
  • The USS Kearsarge is located off the coast of Guyana conducting humanitarian aid missions as part of Operation Continuing Promise 2008.

The Naval Update Map shows an approximation of the current locations of U.S. Carrier Strike Groups (CSGs) and Expeditionary Strike Groups (ESGs), the keys to U.S. dominance of the world’s oceans. A CSG is centered on an aircraft carrier, which projects U.S. naval and air power and supports a carrier air wing. An ESG is centered on a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), a heavily reinforced and mobile battalion of Marines. Each is equipped with a significant offensive strike capability.

The map is updated weekly, based on available open-source information.
